Career and study options for the class of 2024

Completing matric is a huge milestone for scholars and their parents. It is the end of a significant chapter and the beginning of an exciting, but often overwhelming journey into the next phase of life. Deciding on your next steps can be daunting but fortunately, matriculants have options.

University education

If you’ve done well academically and have a clear career direction that requires a degree, university is a great option. Degree programmes offer deep specialisation and are necessary for careers in medicine, law, engineering, and education.

Here in South Africa, we are proud to be the home to world-class universities.

How to get started:

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges

At SPARK Schools, our scholars are reminded in our daily creed that university is an option for them, but it is certainly not the only option. TVET colleges provide practical, career-focused education in industries like hospitality, tourism, agriculture, engineering, and business studies. These programmes are often more affordable than university and are designed to get you workplace-ready.

Why choose TVET?

Learnerships and apprenticeships

If you’re eager to enter the workforce while continuing to learn, a learnership or apprenticeship could be the right fit. These programmes combine classroom instruction with on-the-job training, allowing you to earn while you learn.

Best for:

Starting your career

Some matriculants wish to jump straight into the working world, gaining valuable skills, real-life experience, and financial independence. We suggest looking for entry-level positions to help you identify your strengths and interests before committing to further studies.

Consider:

Become your own boss

Do you have an idea you believe in? You’re never too young to start your own business and South Africa offers various programmes and support structures to guide young entrepreneurs.

Steps to take:

Take a gap year

Taking a gap year can be an excellent time to gain perspective and experience. Whether you’re volunteering, travelling, or working, a gap year can help you discover your passion and align your goals.

Tips for a great gap year:

Online and short courses

If full-time studies or work isn’t an option, online courses offer a flexible way to explore your interests and gain certifications. Platforms like Coursera, Udemy, and even local institutions provide courses in various fields—from digital marketing to coding.

Taking the first step—and the next

Remember, there’s no single “right” path. Your journey after matric is all yours. Take time to explore your options, ask for advice from mentors or career counsellors, and as far as possible, choose a route that aligns with your passions, skills, and goals.

Just take that first step, and if it doesn’t work out, remember—you can always take another route. It’s never too late to change direction and pursue a path that feels right for you.
