SPARK Schools: Solution to The School Shortage in Gauteng

Quality education that’s more affordable than some government schools

Gauteng urgently needs 142 new schools – or more than 5 550 classrooms – to address the growing shortage of classrooms for 2019.
This excludes the schools required in new residential developments as well as the estimated 114 000 additional new learners who flock to the province each year.
This was the recent finding by the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) who prepared a report after a provincial-wide visit with Members of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.
Step up SPARK Schools, the independent educational institution which is positively disrupting and challenging the face of education in South Africa.
It is doing this not only in the revolutionary way its scholars are taught but – more importantly – disputing the view that quality independent education has to be costly and unaffordable to those in the lower income bracket.
And they have the facts and figures to prove it.
Next year five new SPARK independent primary schools will be opened in Gauteng, including one in Soweto, bringing the total number of schools to 19 while the educational institution will also open its first high school which will be located in Randburg, Johannesburg.
The lauded SPARK Schools, with its groundbreaking blended learning model, costs less than many government-run schools and that, combined with inexpensive after-school costs, makes them hugely attractive and affordable.
This year SPARK Schools was placed in the top three in a list of the top 10 private schools in Johannesburg
Says Kugandrie Moodley, SPARK Schools’ Head of Sales and Marketing: “Due to our accelerated expansion across our network, we currently have space in our primary schools, from Grades R to 7, so we could alleviate some of the shortage problem identified by the NCOP.

SPARK School Tuition and Fees

“In keeping with the SPARK Schools commitment for school fees to stay as low as possible, fees for 2019 have been set at R23 100 per annum. Compare this with some government schools in middle-class areas which are charging up to R30 000 per annum for Grade R.
At this rate, and the level of high-quality education, our schools are filling up rapidly and parents are urged not to wait until the last minute.”

The SPARK Schools Learning Model

SPARK Schools believes in providing high-calibre education with impressive results at an affordable cost to working parents.  They do this through their use of a blended learning model that combines direct instruction with technology.
A recent SPARK Schools study found that the reading ability of their scholars who had completed Grade R was vastly superior to that of other schools – both government and other private schools – with the majority of SPARK Schools Grade R scholars on a par with Grade 1 or Grade 2 students from other schools.
Says Bailey Thomson Blake, Head of Schools: “At SPARK Schools, reading and writing make up a large proportion of a student’s daily timetable, especially in the foundation phase.
Literacy comprises nearly half of the instructional day in Grades R to 3, to ensure that students learn and practise reading and writing skills that they can confidently take with them into the intermediate phase and beyond.”
