How to survive and thrive in your first year of high school

Every year, thousands of teens start their journey into high school. While some kids can immediately thrive, others may find high school difficult. Some kids may have difficulty adjusting to high school as they are unfamiliar with the school environment and culture.

SPARK Randburg High Assistant Principal Fradrick Chelenje shares five practical tips to help you not only survive high school but thrive.

Plan Ahead for High School

There are different types of high schools available to you. Knowing what’s important to you and how you like to learn can help you decide the type of school to attend. When choosing the high school, it is essential to ensure that it is the right fit for you, making the transition less overwhelming. A Separate Notebook for Each Subject

Having a separate notebook for each class helps you stay organised. You’ll have more lessons to attend in high school, each with content more difficult than in primary school. Getting into the habit of using a different notebook for each class will make it easier when you start high school.

Plan Ahead for your Assignments/Projects

It’s really easy to push off assignments until the day before they’re due, but this becomes difficult in high school.  Your academic workload will be more in high school; therefore, waiting until the last minute to do assignments can hurt your grades.

To overcome this, start doing your homework and assignments way ahead of time to prepare yourself for high school. Doing your homework on time will make it easier for you to deal with your academic workload in high school.

Have a personal Study Timetable

You’ll have more tests in high school, and it will be essential to know when to study for them. When you know you have an upcoming test, take some time each day before the test to study. Get into a habit of using flashcards, taking notes, or studying with a buddy to prepare for the test.

Ask for Help

Asking for help can be embarrassing. No one likes to admit they’re having a hard time, but everyone needs help sometimes. If you’re struggling with a class, it’s a lot easier to ask for help early on instead of later when you might be even more overwhelmed and stressed. In high school, you’ll be asked to take on even more responsibilities. Asking for help now can ease your current anxieties and teach you ways to cope with the pressures of added responsibilities in your future.

Conclusion

The years spent in high school can be the best years of your schooling life; therefore, it is essential to enjoy it. You will be figuring a lot of things about yourself, and this is part of the journey.

The most crucial thing is asking for help, don’t be afraid to ask your teachers when you are struggling with something. Your parents or guardians are also there to help if you stumble across challenging situations.
